Eating Food Slaughtered by Christian Arabs

SUMMARY: It is permissible to consume food slaughtered by Christian Arabs, but one should not take them as friends.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Thawr ibn Zayd ad-Dili that Abdullah ibn Abbas was asked about animals slaughtered by the Christian Arabs. He said, "There is no harm in them," but he recited this ayat, "Whoever takes them as friends is from them". (Sura 5 ayat 54).

QUICK LESSONS:
Interact carefully and cautiously when dealing with people of other faiths; Maintain your identity as a Muslim; Consume food slaughtered by Christian Arabs if necessary .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of consuming food slaughtered by Christian Arabs. Abdullah ibn Abbas was asked about this and he said that it is permissible to eat such food. However, he also recited a verse from the Quran which states that whoever takes them as friends is from them. This implies that although it is permissible to consume their food, one should not befriend or associate with them too closely. The hadith teaches us to be careful in our dealings with people of other faiths and not let our relationship become too close or intimate. We must remember that we are Muslims first and foremost and must maintain our identity even when interacting with people of other faiths.
