Swearing By Allah Instead of Fathers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade Umar ibn al-Khattab from swearing by his father and instead encouraged him to swear by Allah or remain silent.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that one time the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was speaking to Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was travelling with a troop and Umar swore by his father and he (the Messenger) said, "Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers. If anyone swears, let him swear by Allah or keep silent".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your parents and avoid using their names in vain; speak with reverence for God’s name only; use God’s name when swearing instead of anyone else’s name; strive to be mindful of your words at all times .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of swearing by Allah instead of one's father. The Prophet Muhammad was travelling with a troop when he heard Umar ibn al-Khattab swear by his father and he immediately corrected him saying that it is forbidden to do so. He then encouraged him to either swear by Allah or keep silent instead. This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting our parents and not using their name in vain as well as the power of remaining silent when we are angry or frustrated. It also reminds us that we should always strive to use God's name in our speech rather than anyone else's name as it is more respectful and meaningful.
