Kaffara for Vows

SUMMARY: A woman came to Ibn Abbas asking what to do about a vow she had made to sacrifice her son, and he told her not to sacrifice him and instead do kaffara for the oath.

Yahya related to me from Malik that Yahya ibn Said heard al-Qasim ibn Muhammad say, "A woman came to Abdullah ibn Abbas and said, 'I have vowed to sacrifice my son'. Ibn Abbas said, 'Do not sacrifice your son. Do kaffara for your oath'. An old man with Ibn Abbas said, 'What kaffara is there for this?' Ibn Abbas said, 'Allah the Exalted said, "Those of you who say, regarding their wives'.Be as my mother's back' (surah 58 ayat 2) and then He went on to oblige the kaffara for it as you have seen'. "

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who came to Ibn Abbas asking what she should do about a vow she had made to sacrifice her son. Ibn Abbas told her not to sacrifice him and instead do kaffara for the oath. The old man with Ibn Abbas asked what kaffara was there for this situation, and Ibn Abbas referred back to (58:2) Surah 58 ayat 2 in the Quran which states that those who make such vows must pay a certain amount of money as compensation or feed sixty poor people in order for their vow or oaths be fulfilled. This hadith teaches us that we should think carefully before making any vows or promises because it can be difficult if not impossible at times to fulfill them without consequences. It also teaches us that if we are unable fulfill our promises then we should seek out alternative ways of doing so such as paying money or feeding the poor in order for our obligations be fulfilled according to Islamic law.
