(Book 21, Hadith 43) #36070
Types of Military Expeditions

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that there are two types of military expeditions, one which is good and the other which is not. The one who fights in a bad military expedition will not be rewarded.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn Said that Muadh ibn Jabal said, "There are two military expeditions. There is one military expedition in which valuables are spent, the contributor is willing, the authorities are obeyed, and corruption is avoided. That military expedition is all good. There is a military expedition in which valuables are not spent, the contributor is not willing, the authorities are not obeyed, and corruption is not avoided. The one who fights in that military expedition does not return with reward".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about two different types of military expeditions. One type is where valuables are spent, the contributor is willing, the authorities are obeyed, and corruption is avoided. This type of expedition will bring reward to those who fight in it. On the other hand, there is a type of expedition where valuables are not spent, the contributor is not willing, authorities are not obeyed and corruption is avoided; those who fight in this kind of expedition will not receive any reward for their efforts. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to do good deeds as they will be rewarded by Allah SWT while bad deeds will only bring us harm and no rewards whatsoever. It also teaches us to obey our leaders and avoid corruption at all costs as these actions can lead to negative consequences for ourselves as well as others around us.
