Martyrdom of Umar ibn al-Khattab

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab was washed, shrouded and prayed over even though he was a martyr.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that Umar ibn al-Khattab was washed and shrouded and prayed over, yet he was a martyr, may Allah have mercy on him .
حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، غُسِّلَ وَكُفِّنَ وَصُلِّيَ عَلَيْهِ وَكَانَ شَهِيدًا يَرْحَمُهُ اللَّهُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the martyrdom of Umar ibn al-Khattab. It is narrated by Yahya who heard it from Malik who heard it from Nafi who heard it from Abdullah ibn Umar. The hadith states that even though Umar was a martyr, he was still washed and shrouded and prayed over. This shows the importance of honoring those who have passed away regardless of their status in life or death. It also teaches us to respect our elders and those we love even after they have passed away as we would when they were alive. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that prayer can be done for anyone regardless if they are alive or dead as prayer can still reach them in the afterlife.
