Sahih al-Bukhari 3776 (Book 63, Hadith 1) #3604
The Virtues of Al-Ansar

SUMMARY: Anas bin Malik was asked about the name 'Al-Ansar' and he said that Allah called them by it. He also narrated to people the virtues and deeds of the Ansar.

Narrated Ghailan bin Jarir: I asked Anas, "Tell me about the name 'Al-Ansar.; Did you call yourselves by it or did Allah call you by it?" He said, "Allah called us by it". We used to visit Anas (at Basra) and he used to narrate to us the virtues and deeds of the Ansar, and he used to address me or a person from the tribe of Al-Azd and say, "Your tribe did so-and-so on such-and-such a day".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a conversation between Ghailan bin Jarir and Anas bin Malik regarding the name 'Al-Ansar'. Ghailan asked Anas if they called themselves by this name or if Allah called them by it. Anas replied that Allah had given them this name. He then went on to narrate to people the virtues and deeds of Al-Ansar, which were admirable acts done in service of God. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to do good deeds in order to be worthy of being called an Ansari, as well as reminding us that our actions have consequences both in this life and in the hereafter. We should strive for excellence in all aspects of our lives so that we can be proud when we are remembered for our good works after death.
