Performing Hajj without Wudu

SUMMARY: A man can perform the rituals of Hajj even if he is not in wudu, but it is better for him to be in wudu. He can stand while mounted unless he or his riding beast have an illness.

Malik was asked about whether a man could stand at Arafa, or at Muzdalifa, or stone the Jamarat, or do say between Safa and Marwa if he was not in wudu, and he said, "Every practice in the hajj that a menstruating woman can take part in can be taken part in by a man who is not in wudu and there is nothing due from him for that. However, it is better for him to be in wudu for all those things, and he should not make a general practice of it". Malik was asked whether a man who was riding should get down to do the standing at Arafa or if he could stand while mounted, and he said, "He can stand while mounted, unless he or his riding beast have an illness, in which case Allah is the one who most often accepts an excuse".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow God's commands and regulations regarding purity when performing rituals related to hajj; show compassion towards those who may be ill or disabled; make use of permissible supplications when praying; practice worshiping God according to Prophet Muhammad's teachings .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith discussed here is about performing the rituals of Hajj without being in a state of ablution. It was narrated by Malik ibn Anas that a man can take part in all the practices of Hajj even if he is not in a state of wudu, and there will be no penalty for that. However, it is better for him to be in wudu during these practices as it has been prescribed by Allah. Furthermore, if a man is riding on an animal during his pilgrimage, then he does not need to get down from his mount to do the standing at Arafa; instead, he can stand while mounted unless either himself or his animal are ill and unable to do so. In such cases, Allah will accept their excuse as He knows best what they are going through and what their limitations are.
