(Book 20, Hadith 133) #35896
The Prophet's Journey and Fasting

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) drinking milk while on a journey, which suggests that he was not fasting.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn Ubaydullah, from Umayr, the mawla of Abdullah ibn Abbas, from Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith, that she was present when some people were arguing on the day of Arafa about whether the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was fasting or not. Some of them said he was fasting, and some of them said he was not. So she sent a bowl of milk to him while his camel was standing still and he drank.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for others' opinions, seek out evidence before making assumptions

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's journey on the day of Arafah. On this day, some people were arguing whether or not he was fasting. To settle this dispute, Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith sent him a bowl of milk while his camel was standing still and he drank it. This suggests that he was not fasting at that time as it would be forbidden to break one's fast with milk during Ramadan. From this hadith we learn that even though fasting is an important part of Islam, there are certain times when it can be broken such as when travelling or if one is ill or pregnant. We also learn to respect other people's opinions and to seek out evidence before making assumptions about something we are unsure of.
