Killing Animals During Ihram

SUMMARY: It is permissible to kill certain animals while in the state of Ihram.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "There are five kinds of animal which it is not wrong for some one in ihram to kill: crows, kites, scorpions, rats and mice, and wild dogs".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show mercy towards all living things including animals ; Be mindful ; Be aware ; Show kindness ; Respect life ; Have compassion

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that there are five kinds of animals which it is permissible to kill while in the state of Ihram. These animals include crows, kites, scorpions, rats and mice and wild dogs. This teaching shows us that we should be mindful of our actions even when we are in a sacred state such as Ihram. We should also be aware that some creatures are allowed to be killed for a specific purpose and not just out of cruelty or malice.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also taught us about mercy and kindness towards all living things including animals. He said “Whoever is kind to the creatures of God is kind to himself” (Sahih Muslim). This hadith reminds us that even though it may be permissible to kill certain animals during Ihram for a specific purpose, we should still show mercy towards them by not killing them unnecessarily or out of malice or cruelty.
