Sahih al-Bukhari 362 (Book 8, Hadith 14) #358
Praying with Modesty

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) instructed women to not raise their heads while praying until the men had finished and sat down straight.

Narrated Sahl: The men used to pray with the Prophet with their Izars tied around their necks as boys used to do; therefore the Prophet told the women not to raise their heads till the men sat down straight (while praying).

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow instructions given by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding prayer etiquette for women

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of modesty when praying. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ instructed women to not raise their heads while praying until the men had finished and sat down straight. This was because the men used to pray with their Izars tied around their necks like boys do. An Izar is a type of clothing that covers from waist to ankles and is worn by both men and women in some cultures. By tying it around their necks, it would be easier for them to bow down during prayer without having it fall off or get in the way. The Prophet ﷺ wanted women to maintain modesty during prayer by keeping their heads lowered until all of the men were done so they wouldn't be distracted or tempted by what they saw around them. He also wanted them to remain focused on worshipping Allah instead of being distracted by other people's movements or conversations during prayer time.
