The Perfume Incident

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab discovered the smell of perfume and asked who it was from. Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan answered that it was from him, and Umar told him to go back and wash it off.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Aslam, the mawla of Umar ibn al Khattab, that Umar ibn al-Khattab discovered the smell of perfume while he was at ash-Shajara, and he asked, "Who is this smell of perfume coming from?" Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan answered, "From me, amir al-muminin". Umar said, "From you? By the life of Allah!" Muawiya explained, "Umm Habiba perfumed me, amir al-muminin"'.Umar then said, "You must go back and wash it off".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation between Umar ibn al-Khattab and Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan. When Umar was at ash-Shajara, he smelled perfume coming from Muawiya. He asked who it was coming from, and Muawiya said that he had been perfumed by his wife, Umm Habiba. In response to this, Umar told him to go back and wash off the perfume because wearing perfume is not allowed in Islam according to some scholars. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful with our actions as Muslims because they can have an effect on others around us even if we don't intend for them too. We should also be mindful of what we wear or use in terms of fragrance or clothing so as not to offend those around us or cause any harm unintentionally.
