Making Up Missed Days of Ramadan

SUMMARY: It is permissible to break the fast in Ramadan due to illness or travel, and the missed days should be made up consecutively.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar used to say, "Someone who breaks the fast in Ramadan because he is ill or travelling should make up the days he has missed consecutively".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic practices and rituals with respect .

EXPLANATIONS:
During the month of Ramadan Muslims are obligated to fast during daylight hours. However, if a person is ill or travelling they are allowed to break their fast and make up for those days at a later time. This hadith explains that when making up for these missed days it should be done consecutively rather than sporadically throughout the year. This hadith teaches us that even though we may have valid reasons for breaking our fast during this holy month we must still make an effort to fulfill our obligations as Muslims by making up those missed days as soon as possible.
