The Importance of Fasting on Ashura

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab instructed al-Harith ibn Hisham to fast on the day of Ashura and to tell his family to do the same.

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that Umar ibn al-Khattab had sent (the following message) to al-Harith ibn Hisham, ''Tomorrow is the day of Ashura, so fast (it) and tell your family to fast (also)".
وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، أَرْسَلَ إِلَى الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ أَنَّ غَدًا، يَوْمُ عَاشُورَاءَ فَصُمْ وَأْمُرْ أَهْلَكَ أَنْ يَصُومُوا

This hadith is about the importance of fasting on the day of Ashura. It was narrated by Yahya from Malik that Umar ibn al-Khattab sent a message to al-Harith ibn Hisham instructing him to fast on this day and also telling his family members to do so as well.
