Fasting While Travelling

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave permission to a man to fast or break the fast while travelling.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that Hamza ibn Amr al-Aslami once said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, "Messenger of Allah, I am a man who fasts. Can I fast when travelling?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "If you want you can fast, and if you want you can break the fast".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting while travelling. It was narrated by Yahya from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that Hamza ibn Amr al-Aslami once asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace if he could fast when travelling. The Prophet Muhammad replied that he can either choose to fast or break the fast while travelling. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible for Muslims to break their fast when they are on a journey as long as they make up for it later on. It also teaches us that we should always seek permission before doing something in Islam so we can be sure it is allowed according to Islamic teachings.
