Breaking Fast While Travelling

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ordered people to break their fast while on a journey, even though he himself kept fasting. He later drank from a bowl and everyone broke their fast.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Sumayyah, the mawla of Abu Bakr ibn Abd ar-Rahman, from Abu Bakr ibn Abd ar-Rahman from one of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered everyone to break the fast on the journey he made in the year of the conquest saying, "Be strong for your enemy," while the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, kept on fasting. Abu Bakr said that the one who related this to him said, "I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, pouring water over his head at al-Arj, either from thirst or from the heat. Then some one said to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, 'Messenger of Allah, a group of people kept on fasting when you did'. Then when the Messenger of Allah was at al-Kadid, he asked for a drinking-bowl and drank, and everyone broke the fast".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be considerate towards your fellow travellers during journeys ; Take breaks when necessary ; Be mindful of your own health during travel .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about breaking the fast while travelling. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH was travelling with his companions and ordered them to break their fast even though he himself kept fasting. When they reached al-Kadid, he asked for a drinking bowl and drank from it which signalled that everyone should break their fast as well. This hadith teaches us that we should be considerate towards our fellow travellers when we are on a journey together and not put too much strain on them by expecting them to keep up with us in terms of religious obligations such as fasting if it is too difficult for them or if it will cause harm to their health or wellbeing in any way. We should also be mindful of our own health during travel and take breaks when necessary so that we can continue our journey without any difficulty or hardship.
