Kissing and Joking While Fasting

SUMMARY: It is permissible to kiss and joke with one's spouse while fasting.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n-Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn Ubaydullah that A'isha bint Talha told him that she was once with A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and her husband, who was fasting, came and visited her there. (He was Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Bakras-Siddiq) A'isha said to him, "What's stopping you from coming close to your wife and kissing her and joking with her?" He said, "Can I kiss her when I am fasting?" She said, "Yes".

QUICK LESSONS:
Show kindness towards your spouse even when you are fasting by using words or gestures like hugs or kisses.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of kissing and joking with one's spouse while fasting. A'isha bint Talha asked her husband Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Bakras-Siddiq if he could kiss his wife while fasting and she said yes. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible to show affection towards our spouses even when we are fasting as long as it does not lead us into any form of sin or disobedience towards Allah SWT. We should remember that although we are abstaining from food and drink during Ramadan, we should still be kind to our families by showing them love and affection in other ways such as through words or gestures like hugs or kisses.
