Paying Zakat Al-Fitr

SUMMARY: Abdullah ibn Umar paid the zakat al-fitr in dates, except once when he paid it in barley.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar would always pay the zakat al-fitr in dates, except once, when he paid it in barley.

QUICK LESSONS:
Pay your zakat al-fitr with either dates or barley if you have enough money to do so.

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith is about paying the zakat al-fitr. Zakat al-fitr is a charity given at the end of Ramadan and it is obligatory for every Muslim who has enough money to pay for himself and his dependents. This hadith tells us that Abdullah ibn Umar usually paid this charity in dates but once he paid it in barley instead. This shows us that we can pay our zakat al-fitr with either dates or barley as long as we have enough money to do so. It also teaches us the importance of giving charity and helping those who are less fortunate than ourselves.
