(Book 17, Hadith 39) #35668
Refusing Zakat from People of Syria

SUMMARY: Umar ibn al-Khattab refused to take zakat from the people of Syria, but suggested that they give it to their poor instead.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Sulayman ibn Yasar that the people of Syria said to Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah, "Take zakat from our horses and slaves," and he refused. Then he wrote to Umar ibn al-Khattab and he (also) refused. Again they talked to him and again he wrote to Umar, and Umar wrote back to him saying, "If they want, take it from them and (then) give it back to them and give their slaves provision". Malik said, "What he means, may Allah have mercy upon him, by the words 'and give it back to them' is, 'to their poor'. "

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous and help those in need by providing them with what they require for sustenance and survival; strive towards creating a society where everyone has access to basic necessities such as food, shelter etc.; look after our fellow brothers and sisters in faith who are less fortunate than ourselves; provide provision for those who cannot afford it themselves; practice charity whenever possible.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the refusal of Umar ibn al-Khattab, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, to take zakat or charity tax from the people of Syria. Instead, he suggested that they give it back to their poor and provide them with provisions. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous and help those in need by providing them with what they require for sustenance and survival. It also shows us how important it is for us as Muslims to look after our fellow brothers and sisters in faith who are less fortunate than ourselves. We should strive towards creating a society where everyone has access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, clothing etc., so that no one is left behind or deprived due to poverty or lack of resources.
