The Importance of Justice in Wealth Collection

SUMMARY: Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz ordered the unjustly collected wealth to be returned to its owner and zakat to be taken from it for the years that had passed, but later revised his order with a message that zakat should only be taken from it once.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ayyub ibn Abi Tamima as- Sakhtiyani that Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, when writing about wealth that one of his governors had collected unjustly, ordered it to be returned to its owner and zakat to be taken from it for the years that had passed. Then shortly afterwards he revised his order with a message that zakat should only be taken from it once, since it was not wealth in hand.

QUICK LESSONS:
Ensure fairness and equity in our dealings so as not to take advantage of others or cause them any harm or loss.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of justice when collecting wealth. Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz was a governor who collected wealth unjustly, and he initially ordered for it to be returned and zakat taken from it for all the years that had passed. However, he later revised his order with a message that zakat should only be taken once since it was not considered as actual wealth in hand. This teaches us an important lesson about justice when dealing with money matters; we must always ensure fairness and equity in our dealings so as not to take advantage of others or cause them any harm or loss.
