Resting and Lying on Graves

SUMMARY: It is forbidden to sit on graves for relieving oneself, but it is permissible to rest one's head or lie on them.

ahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that AIi ibn Abi Talib used to rest his head on graves and lie on them. Malik said, "As far as we can see ,it is only forbidden to sit on graves to relieve oneself".
وَحَدَّثَنِي عَنْ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّهُ بَلَغَهُ أَنَّ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، كَانَ يَتَوَسَّدُ الْقُبُورَ وَيَضْطَجِعُ عَلَيْهَا ‏.‏ قَالَ مَالِكٌ وَإِنَّمَا نُهِيَ عَنِ الْقُعُودِ عَلَى الْقُبُورِ فِيمَا نُرَى لِلْمَذَاهِبِ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the permissibility of resting one's head or lying on graves. It was narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib that he used to rest his head and lie on graves. Malik said that as far as they can see, it is only forbidden to sit on graves for relieving oneself. This hadith teaches us the importance of respecting the dead and not disrespecting them in any way. We should remember that those who are buried in a grave have passed away and we should treat their resting place with respect and reverence. We should also remember that Allah will judge us all according to our deeds, so we must strive to do good deeds in order to be rewarded in the hereafter.
