Shrouding the Dead

SUMMARY: A dead person is to be clothed in a shirt, waist-wrapper and a third garment, or if only one garment is available, it should be used for shrouding.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Humayd ibn Abdar-Rahman ibn Awf that Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As said, "A dead man is clothed in a shirt and a waist-wrapper and then wrapped in a third, and if he only has one garment he is shrouded in that".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respectfully clothe the deceased before burial according to Islamic funeral rites .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the Islamic practice of shrouding the dead before burial. It states that when a person passes away, they should be clothed in three garments - a shirt, waist-wrapper and third garment - or if only one garment is available then it should be used for shrouding. This practice of dressing up the deceased has been mentioned in many other hadiths as well and serves as an important part of Islamic funeral rites. It shows respect to the deceased by providing them with clothing before their burial and also serves as an act of charity towards them since they are no longer able to provide for themselves. The hadith also teaches us about being mindful of our resources and using whatever we have at our disposal in order to fulfill our obligations towards others even after death.
