(Book 15, Hadith 8) #35529
Turning Away From Those In Need

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, who was a blind man, coming to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and asking for a place near him. The Prophet (PBUH) began to turn away from him and give his attention to another man. This made Allah angry and He sent down the Surah Abasa in response.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa that his father said that Abasa (Sura 80) was sent down about Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum. He came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and began to say, "O Muhammad, show me a place near you (where I can sit)," whilst one of the leading men of the idol worshippers was in audience with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, began to turn away from him and give his attention to the other man, and he said to him, "Father of so-and-so, do you see any harm in what I am saying?" and he said, "No, by the blood (of our sacrifices) I see no harm in what you are saying". And Abasa - "He frowned and turned away when the blind man came" - was sent down.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be kind towards those in need; Pay attention & help out whenever possible; Do not ignore someone’s plea for help due their social status or background; Do not pass over people without helping them out if you can do so easily .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of an incident involving the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum was a blind man who came to ask for a place near the Prophet (PBUH). However, at that time there was another person present who was one of the leading men of idol worshippers. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) began to turn away from Abdullah and give his attention to this other person instead. This made Allah angry and He sent down Surah Abasa in response as a reminder not to turn away those in need or pass over them without paying attention or helping them out. It teaches us that we should always be kind towards those in need, no matter their social status or background, as it is our duty as Muslims towards each other. We should never ignore someone’s plea for help just because they are not important enough or because we are busy with something else at that moment - it is our responsibility as believers of Islam to help out whenever possible.
