This hadith speaks to us about how people's behaviour changes over time. It tells us that in a certain period, there were many people who understood and followed the teachings of the Quran but few who recited it. People respected and followed its limits but did not pay attention to its letters. Few asked for help while many gave it away, they made their prayer long but their khutba short, and put their actions before their desires. However, this will change in another period where there are fewer people who understand the Quran but more who recite it; they guard its letters carefully but do not follow its limits; many ask for help while few give it away; they make their khutba long but prayer short; and put their desires before actions. This hadith reminds us that we should always strive to understand and follow what is taught in the Quran so that our behaviour remains consistent with its teachings no matter what period we live in.
