This hadith emphasizes the importance of pre-prayer hygiene. It was narrated by Yahya from Malik from Hisham ibn Urwa from his father that Abdullah ibn al-Arqam used to lead his companions in prayer. One day when the time for prayer came, he went to relieve himself and when he returned he said that he heard the Messenger of Allah say “If you wish to defecate, you should do so before the prayer”. This hadith teaches us that it is important for us to take care of our hygiene before we pray as it is a form of respect towards Allah and His house -the mosque or place where we pray-. We should make sure that we are clean and presentable before we start our prayers as this will help us focus on what matters most -our relationship with Allah-.
