Shortening Prayers in Makka

SUMMARY: Ibn Umar stayed in Makka for ten nights and shortened his prayer, except when he prayed behind an imam.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Ibn Umar stayed in Makka for ten nights, shortening the prayer, except when he prayed it behind an imam, in which case he followed the imam's prayer.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious obligations, follow practices of Imams, be mindful of religious duties even when away from home or on vacation .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of shortening prayers while staying in the city of Makka. It was narrated by Yahya from Malik from Nafi that Ibn Umar stayed in Makka for ten nights and shortened his prayer during this time. However, when he prayed behind an Imam he followed the Imam's prayer instead of shortening it. This hadith teaches us that we should follow the practices of our Imams and not do something different than what they are doing. It also teaches us to be mindful of our religious obligations even when we are away from home or on vacation. We should always strive to fulfill our religious duties as best as possible no matter where we are or what situation we find ourselves in.
