Shortening Prayers When Leading Others

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised people to keep their prayers short when leading others, as there may be weak, ill and old people present. However, when praying alone one can make the prayer as long as they wish.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'z Zinad from al-Araj from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When you lead people in the prayer, make it short, because there are among them some people who are weak, ill and old. But when you pray on your own, make it as long as you wish".

QUICK LESSONS:
Consider other people’s needs and abilities before our own desires and comfort; pray for a longer period of time if possible without causing any hardship on ourselves or anyone else around us; lead prayers in a shorter duration out of consideration for those who are weak, ill or old .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of shortening prayers when leading others in prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised that this should be done out of consideration for those who are weak, ill or old and may not be able to keep up with a longer prayer. However, when praying alone one can make the prayer as long as they wish. This hadith teaches us that we should always consider other people’s needs and abilities before our own desires and comfort. We should also remember that Allah loves it when we pray for a longer period of time if we are able to do so without causing any hardship on ourselves or anyone else around us.
