This hadith explains the rules of Jumu’ah prayer for travelers and people in towns where it is obligatory. According to this hadith, if an Imam stops off on a journey in a town where jumua is obligatory and he gives a khutba and takes the jumua prayer for them then both the people of that town as well as any other people present should do the jumua prayer with him. However if an Imam gathers people for prayer while travelling in a town where juma’a is not obligatory then there will be no juma’a either for him or anyone else who joins them in congregation. Furthermore, travelers are not obligated to perform Juma’a prayers. This hadith teaches us that we must abide by religious laws even when travelling and also respect those laws which are specific to certain places or regions.
