(Book 5, Hadith 5) #35284
The Importance of Ghusl Before Jumu'ah

SUMMARY: It is important to do ghusl (ritual bath) before attending Jumu'ah (Friday prayer).

Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "When you come to jumua, do ghusl". Malik said, "It is not enough for someone to do a ghusl on the day of jumua and intend by it the ghusl for jumua unless he does the ghusl and then sets off. That is because the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said in the hadith related by Ibn Umar, 'When you come to jumua, do ghusl '. " Malik said, "If someone does ghusl on the day of jumua and intends by it the ghusl of the day of jumua and then sets out, whether early or late, and does something which breaks his wudu, he only has to do wudu and his ghusl remains valid for him".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of performing a ritual bath or ghusl before attending the Friday prayer or jumua. It was narrated by Yahya from Malik from Nafi from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah said “When you come to juma’a, do ghusl”. This means that it is necessary for Muslims to perform a ritual bath before attending juma’a in order to be spiritually and physically clean for this special day. Furthermore, if someone does a ritual bath on the day of juma’a and intends by it for the ghusl for juma’a but then does something which breaks his wudhu he only has to do wudhu as his ghusal remains valid for him. This hadith teaches us about being mindful and conscious about our spiritual cleanliness when we attend religious gatherings such as juma’a prayers.
