The Practice of Four Caliphs in Prayer

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the practice of the four Caliphs not reciting "In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate" when they began their prayer.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Humayd at-Tawil that Anas ibn Malik said, "I stood behind Abu Bakr and Umar and Uthman and none of them used to recite 'In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate' when they began the prayer".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for different ways of praying; Understand that there are many paths to reach God; Validity in different forms of worshiping God
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about how four caliphs, Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali did not recite "In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate" when they began their prayer. This shows us that even though it is a common practice to recite this phrase before beginning prayer today, it was not necessarily done by all in earlier times. It also teaches us that there are different ways to pray and still be considered as valid. We can learn from this hadith that we should respect different ways of praying and understand that there are many paths to reach God.
