(Book 2, Hadith 95) #35180
Menstruation Etiquette

SUMMARY: During menstruation, a woman should cover her body with a waist-wrapper and the husband should not go beyond that.

Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that a man questioned the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying, "What is permitted me from my wife when she is menstruating?" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Let her wrap her waist-wrapper round herself tightly, and then what is above that is your concern".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the etiquette of menstruating women in Islam. It is narrated by Yahya related to me from Malik from Zayd ibn Aslam that a man asked the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ what he was allowed to do with his wife when she was on her period. The Prophet ﷺ replied that she should wrap her waist-wrapper tightly around herself and then whatever is above it is up to him. This hadith teaches us that during menstruation, husbands must respect their wives’ privacy and not go beyond what they are allowed to do according to Islamic teachings. It also teaches us about modesty and how important it is for both men and women in Islam. Furthermore, this hadith emphasizes the importance of respecting each other’s boundaries even within marriage as well as understanding each other’s needs during difficult times such as menstruation or any other time of distress or hardship for either partner in marriage.
