(Book 2, Hadith 27) #35112
Praying Without Wudu

SUMMARY: Anas ibn Malik was asked why he did wudu after eating, and he replied that it was an Iraqi custom. Abu Talha and Ubayy ibn Kab then prayed without doing wudu.

It was related to me from Malik from Musa ibn Uqba from Abd ar- Rahman ibn Yazid al-Ansari that when Anas ibn Malik came back from Iraq, Abu Talha and Ubayy ibn Kab visited him. He brought them some cooked food and they ate, and then Anas got up and did wudu. Abu Talha and Ubayy ibn Kab asked, "What's this, Anas? Is it an Iraqi custom?" and Anas said, "I wish I had not done it". (ie wudu). Abu Talha and Ubayy ibn Kab both got up and prayed without doing wudu.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect for prayer by giving it utmost importance regardless of any customs or traditions associated with it .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of prayer in Islam. It is narrated by Malik from Musa Ibn Uqba from Abd ar-Rahman Ibn Yazid al-Ansari that when Anas Ibn Malik returned from Iraq, Abu Talha and Ubayy Ibn Kab visited him. He served them some cooked food which they ate after which Anas got up to do wudu. When asked why he did so, Anas said it was an Iraqi custom but wished he hadn't done it. Upon hearing this both Abu Talha and Ubayy Ibn Kab got up to pray without doing wudu as a sign of respect for the act of prayer itself rather than following any customs or traditions associated with it. This hadith teaches us that prayer should be given utmost importance regardless of any customs or traditions associated with it as Allah has commanded us to pray five times a day in order to stay connected with Him at all times.
