The Rewards of Extra Prayers & Fasting

SUMMARY: The hadith is about two men from Yemen who stayed with Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah. One of them was killed in battle and the other died in his bed after a year. Talhah was shown in a dream that the one who died in his bed entered Paradise before the other, and when he mentioned this to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), he said that it was because of his extra prayers and fasting during Ramadan.

It was narrated that Abu Salamah said: Two men from Yemen came to stay with Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah. One of them was killed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the other remained for a year after that and then he died in his bed. Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah was shown in a dream that the one who died in his bed entered Paradise some time before the other. Talhah mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "How long did he live after (the one who died first)?' He said: "One year". The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "He offered eighteen hundred (extra) prayers and fasted Ramadan'.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ نَزَلَ رَجُلَانِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْيَمَنِ عَلَى طَلْحَةَ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ فَقُتِلَ أَحَدُهُمَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ مَكَثَ الْآخَرُ بَعْدَهُ سَنَةً ثُمَّ مَاتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ فَأُرِيَ طَلْحَةُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ أَنَّ الَّذِي مَاتَ عَلَى فِرَاشِهِ دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ قَبْلَ الْآخَرِ بِحِينٍ فَذَكَرَ ذَلِكَ طَلْحَةُ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَمْ مَكَثَ فِي الْأَرْضِ بَعْدَهُ قَالَ حَوْلًا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ صَلَّى أَلْفًا وَثَمَانِ مِائَةِ صَلَاةٍ وَصَامَ رَمَضَانَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about two men from Yemen who stayed with Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah. One of them was killed while fighting for Allah's cause, while the other lived for another year before dying peacefully in his bed. When Talhah saw a dream where he saw that the one who died peacefully entered paradise first, he asked Prophet Muhammad about it and received an answer which showed us how important extra prayers and fasting are to Allah. It teaches us that if we offer extra prayers or fast during Ramadan, we will be rewarded greatly by Allah even if our deeds are small compared to others'. We should strive to do more good deeds than what is required so that we can receive greater rewards from Allah on Judgment Day.
