Musnad Ahmad 1383 (Book 6, Hadith 3) #35007
Eating Gifts in Ihram

SUMMARY: Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah approved of those who ate a bird given to them while he was sleeping, as the Prophet Muhammad had done the same.

It was narrated from Mu'adh bin 'Abdur-Rahman bin 'Uthman at-Taimi that his father ' Abdur-Rahman bin 'Uthman said: "We were with Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah (رضي الله عنه) and we were in ihram. We were given a bird as a gift whilst Talhah was sleeping. Some of us ate and some of us refrained and did not eat. When Talhah woke up, he approved of those who had eaten it and said: "We ate it with the Messenger of Allah".

QUICK LESSONS:
Accepting gifts during ihram, following Prophet Muhammad's example

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about eating gifts while in ihram. Talhah bin Ubaidullah was with a group of people who were in ihram when they were given a bird as a gift. Some of them ate it and some refrained from eating it. When Talha woke up he approved of those who had eaten it saying that they did so because the Prophet Muhammad also did the same thing. This teaches us that we should not be too strict on ourselves when we are in ihram and can accept gifts if offered to us without feeling guilty or ashamed for doing so. We should also remember that our actions should be based on what our beloved Prophet Muhammad did and follow his example whenever possible.
