Musnad Ahmad 1314 (Book 5, Hadith 716) #34942
Realizing the Middle Prayer is Asr

SUMMARY: The hadith is about how the Prophet (PBUH) taught his companions that the middle prayer was Asr prayer, and not Fajr prayer.

It was narrated that 'Abeedah said: We used to think that the middle prayer was Fajr prayer. Then 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) told us that on the day of al-Ahzab they fought and were distracted from 'Asr prayer. The Prophet said: 'O Allah, fill their graves with fire - or fill their bellies with fire - as they kept us from the middle prayer'. Then on that day we realized that the middle prayer was ’Asr prayer.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about a time when the Prophet Muhammad's companions were confused about which prayer was considered to be the middle prayer. They thought it was Fajr, but then Ali told them that on a certain day they fought and were distracted from their Asr prayers. The Prophet then prayed to Allah asking Him to fill their graves with fire or bellies with fire as they kept them from performing their middle prayers. After this incident, they realized that it was actually Asr which is considered to be the middle prayer. This hadith teaches us that we should always strive to perform our prayers on time and not miss any of them as this can lead us astray from our faith and cause us harm in both this world and in the hereafter. It also teaches us that we should always seek knowledge if we are unsure of something so that we can make sure we are doing things correctly according to Islamic teachings.
