Musnad Ahmad 1311 (Book 5, Hadith 713) #34939
Friendship with 'Ali (RA).

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) declared 'Ali (RA) as his friend and supporter, and the people added that one should take those who take 'Ali (RA) as a friend as friends, and those who take him as an enemy as enemies.

It was narrated from 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Prophet said on the day of Ghadir Khumm: 'If I am a person's mawla (friend and supporter) then 'Ali is also his mawla". And the people added after that: 'So take as friends those who take him as a friend and take as enemies those who take him as an enemy".

QUICK LESSONS:
Stand by your friends in times of need; befriend those taking a friendly stance towards any companions or family members of the beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH suchas Ali ibn Abi Talib; show loyalty towards your friendships;

EXPLANATIONS:
On the day of Ghadir Khumm, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared that if he is someone's mawla or friend and supporter then Ali is also his mawla. This declaration was made to emphasize the importance of friendship with Ali. The people then added that one should take those who take Ali as a friend to be their own friends, and those who take him as an enemy to be their own enemies. This hadith teaches us about loyalty towards our friends, especially towards our beloved prophet's companion Ali ibn Abi Talib. We must always remember to stand by our friends in times of need just like how we would want them to stand by us in times of need. We must also remember not to befriend anyone who has taken an enemy stance against any of our beloved prophet's companions or family members such as Ali ibn Abi Talib.
