Wiping Over Khuffain

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the ruling of wiping over the khuffain (leather socks) for one who is not travelling and for a traveler.

It was narrated that Shuraih bin Hani’ said: I asked 'A'ishah (رضي الله عنها) about wiping over the khuffain. She said: "Ask 'Ali, for he knows more about that than me. He used to travel with the Messenger of Allah ". So I asked 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) and he said: "The Messenger of Allah said: 'For one who is not travelling, one day and night; and for the traveler, three days and nights'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic rulings in all situations regardless of whether you're travelling or not travelling
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the ruling of wiping over the khuffain, which are leather socks that cover up to the ankles. It was narrated by Shuraih bin Hani that he asked 'A'ishah about this issue and she told him to ask 'Ali as he knew more about it than her since he used to travel with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When asked, Ali said that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that for one who is not travelling, they can wipe over their khuffains for one day and night; however, if they are a traveler then they can wipe over them for three days and nights. This hadith teaches us how important it is to follow Islamic rulings even when we are traveling or not traveling as Allah has given us specific instructions on how we should act in both situations. It also teaches us respect towards our elders as Aisha referred Shuraih to Ali knowing that he would know more than her on this topic due to his experience with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ while traveling with him.
