Musnad Ahmad 1244 (Book 5, Hadith 651) #34877
Guidance from Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) for Prayer Etiquette

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised Ali (RA) to not recite the Quran while bowing or prostrating, not to pray with hair twisted or braided, not to sit like a dog between two prostrations, not to play with pebbles, not to lay his forearm on the ground, not to prompt the Imam in prayer, and other such instructions.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah said to me: 'O 'Ali, I love for you what I love for myself and l hate for you what I hate for myself. Do not recite Qur'an whilst bowing or whilst prostrating, do not pray with your hair twisted or braided and gathered up on the head, for that is the place where the Shaitan sits; do not sit like a dog between the two prostrations putting the feet up and sitting on them; do not play with the pebbles; do not lay your forearm along the ground; do not prompt the imam; do not wear gold rings; do not wear garments made from a blend of linen and silk, and do not ride on red saddle cloths'.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about guidance from Prophet Muhammad PBUH regarding prayer etiquette. He advised Ali RA on how he should conduct himself during prayer and what he should avoid doing. He instructed him that it is disliked for one to recite Qur’an whilst bowing or prostrating as this can be distracting and disrespectful towards Allah SWT. He also warned against praying with hair twisted or braided as this is where Shaitan sits when one prays. Other instructions included avoiding playing with pebbles during prayer and laying one’s forearm along the ground as well as prompting the imam in prayer and wearing gold rings or garments made of linen-silk blend while praying. These teachings are important reminders of how we should conduct ourselves when engaging in worship of Allah SWT so that we can attain His pleasure through our prayers.
