Musnad Ahmad 1188 (Book 5, Hadith 598) #34824
The Deformed Man of an-Nahrawan

SUMMARY: 'Ali killed the people of an-Nahrawan and found a deformed man among them.

It was narrated that Abul-Wadi’ said: I saw 'Ali when he killed the people of an-Nahrawan. He said: Look for the deformed one among the slain. They said: We did not find him. He said: Look for him, for by Allah I did not lie and I was not told a lie. And they brought him out from beneath the slain. Abul-Wadi’ said: It is as if I can see him, an Abyssinian with one of his hands like the breast of a woman, on which were hairs like the tail of a Jerboa.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be compassionate and merciful towards those who are weaker or disadvantaged than you; Do not take advantage or mistreat them just because they are different from you; Be honest and truthful in all your dealings so that others can trust your words and actions .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the time when Ali ibn Abu Talib was leading a battle against the people of an Nahrawan. He asked his men to look for a deformed man among those who were slain in battle. They eventually found him and he was described as an Abyssinian with one hand like the breast of a woman with hairs like that of a jerboa. This hadith teaches us that even in times of war, we should still be compassionate and merciful towards those who are weaker or disadvantaged than us. We should not take advantage or mistreat them just because they are different from us or have less power than us. It also teaches us to be honest and truthful in all our dealings so that others can trust our words and actions.
