Musnad Ahmad 1085 (Book 5, Hadith 502) #34728
The Story of Ibrahim (AS) Asking Forgiveness for His Father

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the story of Ibrahim (AS) asking for forgiveness for his father, and how Allah revealed verses in response to this.

It was narrated from Abul-Khaleel that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: I heard a man asking for forgiveness for his parents and they were mushrikeen. I said: Are you asking for forgiveness for your parents when they are mushrikeen? He said: Didn't Ibraheem (عليه السلام) ask for forgiveness for his father when he was a mushrik? I mentioned that to the Prophet and these verses were revealed: "It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe to ask Allah's forgiveness for the Mushrikeen" At-Tawbah 9:113-114'.Abdur-Rahman said: And Allah revealed the words".And Ibraheem's (Abraham) invoking (of Allah) for his father's forgiveness was only because of a promise he Ibraheem (Abraham) had made to him (his father)'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your parents even if they don't follow Islam , Fulfill promises you make with them , Ask forgiveness from Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells the story of Prophet Ibrahim's (AS) request to Allah to forgive his father, even though he was a mushrik. It is said that when Prophet Ali heard this, he mentioned it to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Allah revealed verses in response. These verses explain that it is not proper for the Prophet or those who believe to ask forgiveness from Allah on behalf of mushrikeen. However, it also explains that Ibraheem's request was due to a promise he made with his father before his death. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about respecting our parents even if they do not follow Islam and also teaches us about fulfilling promises we make with them.
