Mission to Raudat Khakh

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad sent three horsemen on a mission to Raudat Khakh.

It was narrated that Abu 'Abdur-Rahman as-Sulami said: I heard 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) say: The Messenger of Allah sent Abu Marthad, az-Zubair bin al-'Awwam and me on a mission, and we were all horsemen. He said: "Go out until you come to Raudat Khakh'. This is how Ibn Abu Shaibah said it "Khakh". Ibn Numair said in his Hadeeth: 'Raudat such and such". And Ibn Numair said: 'Affan told us: Khalid told us: from Husain. a similar report. He said "Raudat Khakh'.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ، قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ حُصَيْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السُّلَمِيِّ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَلِيًّا، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ بَعَثَنِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ وَأَبَا مَرْثَدٍ وَالزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ وَكُلُّنَا فَارِسٌ فَقَالَ انْطَلِقُوا حَتَّى تَأْتُوا رَوْضَةَ خَاخٍ كَذَا قَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ خَاخٍ و قَالَ ابْنُ نُمَيْرٍ فِي حَدِيثِهِ رَوْضَةَ كَذَا وَكَذَا وَحَدَّثَنَاهُ عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدٌ عَنْ حُصَيْنٍ مِثْلَهُ قَالَ رَوْضَةَ خَاخٍ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad sending three horsemen on a mission to a place called Raudat Khakh. The three horsemen were Abu Marthad, az-Zubair bin al-'Awwam and 'Ali bin Abi Talib. This hadith was narrated by Abu 'Abdur-Rahman as-Sulami who heard it from Ali himself. It was also reported by other narrators such as Ibn Numair and Affan who heard it from Khalid and Husain respectively. This hadith teaches us that the Prophet Muhammad valued missions of importance enough to send out his most trusted companions on them even if they were dangerous or difficult tasks. It also shows us how important it is for Muslims to be obedient when they are given orders by their leaders or superiors in order for them to be successful in their endeavors.
