The Significance of Fasting on 'Ashoora

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to fast on the day of 'Ashoora and encouraged others to do so as well.

It was narrated from 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) that The Messenger of Allah used to fast on the day of 'Ashoora’ and enjoined others to do so.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْد اللَّهِ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ يَصُومُ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ وَيَأْمُرُ بِهِ‏.‏
