Musnad Ahmad 922 (Book 5, Hadith 349) #34575
The Excellence of Abu Bakr and Umar

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the excellence of Abu Bakr and Umar, and how Allah bestows goodness on whomever He wills.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: Shall I not tell you of the best of this ummah after its Prophet? It is Abu Bakr, and the best of it after Abu Bakr is 'Umar Then Allah puts goodness wherever He wills.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the excellence of two companions of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him - Abu Bakr and Umar. It was narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib that he said “Shall I not tell you of the best of this ummah after its Prophet? [It is] Abu Bakr, and the best of it after Abu Bakr is 'Umar”. This means that these two men were among the most excellent people in their time. However, it also reminds us that ultimately Allah has control over who He blesses with goodness - so even if someone may not be as excellent as these two men were, they can still receive blessings from Allah if He wills it for them.
