Praising Abdullah bin Mas'ood

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) highly praised Abdullah bin Mas'ood and said that if he had to appoint someone to a position of authority without consulting anyone, he would have chosen him.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah said: "If I were to appoint anyone of my ummah to a position of authority without consultation, I would have appointed Ibn Umm 'Abd (Abdullah bin Mas'ood)'.
حَدَّثَنَا حَسَنُ بْنُ مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورُ بْنُ الْمُعْتَمِرِ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَوْ كُنْتُ مُؤَمِّرًا أَحَدًا مِنْ أُمَّتِي عَنْ غَيْرِ مَشُورَةٍ مِنْهُمْ لَأَمَّرْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ ابْنَ أُمِّ عَبْدٍ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's high praise for his companion, Abdullah bin Mas'ood. He said that if he were to appoint someone from his ummah, or community, to a position of wilayah or authority without consulting anyone else in shuraa', or consultation, then he would have appointed Ibn Umm 'Abd. This shows how much the Prophet valued and respected Abdullah bin Mas'ood and how highly he thought of him. It also teaches us the importance of consultation when making decisions as well as respecting those who are knowledgeable and wise.
