The Dowry of Fatimah

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) gave his daughter Fatimah a velvet garment, a leather pillow, two millstones, a waterskin and two earthenware jars as part of her dowry when she got married.

It was narrated from 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) that when the Messenger of Allah gave Fatimah to him in marriage, he sent with her a velvet garment, a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, two millstones, a waterskin and two earthenware jars.
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، حَدَّثَنَا عَطَاءُ بْنُ السَّائِبِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَمَّا زَوَّجَهُ فَاطِمَةَ بَعَثَ مَعَهَا بِخَمِيلَةٍ وَوِسَادَةٍ مِنْ أَدَمٍ حَشْوُهَا لِيفٌ وَرَحَيَيْنِ وَسِقَاءٍ وَجَرَّتَيْنِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the marriage of the beloved daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, Fatimah. When she was given in marriage to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, her father sent with her an extravagant dowry that included a velvet garment, a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibre, two millstones for grinding grain into flour and making bread, a waterskin for carrying water and two earthenware jars for storing food or other items. This hadith teaches us that it is important to give generously when giving gifts or providing dowries in marriages. It also shows us how much love and care the Prophet had for his daughter by providing such an extravagant gift on her wedding day.
