Musnad Ahmad 730 (Book 5, Hadith 163) #34389
Naming a Son After the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) granted permission to Ali ibn Abi Talib to name his son after him and give him the same kunyah.

It was narrated that Ibn al Hanafiyyah said: 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: O Messenger of Allah , if I have a son after you are gone, I will call him by your name and give him your kunyah. He said: 'Yes'. That was a concession from the Messenger of Allah to 'Ali.

QUICK LESSONS:
Granting permissions within Islamic teachings

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith narrates an incident between the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his companion Ali ibn Abi Talib. It is reported that when Ali asked for permission to name his son after the Prophet and give him the same kunya, he was granted this concession. A kunya is a nickname given to a person in Arabic culture which usually includes Abu or Umm followed by their firstborn's name or another meaningful word. This hadith teaches us that it is permissible in Islam to honor someone by naming our children after them as long as it does not lead us into shirk or idolatry. It also shows us how much respect and love we should have for our beloved prophet who gave such concessions even though they were not obligatory upon him. Furthermore, this hadith encourages us to be generous with granting permissions when asked for them as long as they do not go against Islamic teachings.
