Musnad Ahmad 623 (Book 5, Hadith 60) #34286
Standing Up for Funerals

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his followers to stand up for funerals, but later on he himself remained seated and told them to remain seated as well.

Waqid bin 'Amr bin Sa'd bin Mu'adh said: I saw a funeral among Banu Salimah so I stood up. Nafi’ bin Jubair said to me: Sit down, and I will tell you something decisive about this: Mas'ood bin al-Hakam az-Zuraqi told me that he heard 'Ali bin Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) in Rahbatal-Koofah saying: The Messenger of Allah told us to stand up for funerals; then later on he remained seated and told us to remain seated.

QUICK LESSONS:
Stand up when a funeral procession passes by; Respect the dead; Honor those who have passed away; Take care of oneself

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of standing up for funerals. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught his followers to stand up when a funeral procession passed by. However, at one point he himself remained seated and told his followers to remain seated as well. This teaches us that we should respect the dead but also be mindful of our own health and wellbeing. We should not put ourselves in danger or overexert ourselves in order to show respect for the deceased. It is important that we remember this lesson so that we can honor those who have passed away while still taking care of ourselves.
