Cleanliness for Babies

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that the urine of a baby boy should be sprinkled with water and the urine of a baby girl should be washed.

It was narrated that 'Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: The Messenger of Allah said: 'The urine of a boy is to be sprinkled with water and the urine of a girl is to be washed'. Qatadah said: That is if they are not yet eating solid food; if they are eating solid food then their urine is to be washed in both cases.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي حَرْبِ بْنِ أَبِي الْأَسْوَدِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ بَوْلُ الْغُلَامِ يُنْضَحُ عَلَيْهِ وَبَوْلُ الْجَارِيَةِ يُغْسَلُ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ هَذَا مَا لَمْ يَطْعَمَا فَإِذَا طَعِمَا غُسِلَ بَوْلُهُمَا‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about cleanliness for babies. It was narrated by 'Ali ibn Abi Talib that the Messenger of Allah said that when it comes to babies' urine, if they are not yet eating solid food then their urine should be sprinkled with water if it is a boy and washed if it is a girl. However, if they are already eating solid food then both boys and girls' urine should be washed. This hadith teaches us about cleanliness and hygiene which are important values in Islam as well as in other religions too. It also shows us how much attention we need to pay to our children's health from an early age so that they can grow up healthy and strong.
