Following the Example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The hadith is about following the example of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and not to do something that he did not do.

It was narrated that one of the family of Ya'la bin Umayyah said: Ya'la said:I circumambulated the Ka’bah with 'Uthman (رضي الله عنه) and he touched the corner. Ya'la said: I was next to the House and when I reached the western corner which is next to the Black Stone. I took his hand to touch it and he said: What is the matter with you? I said: Aren't you going to touch it? He said: Did you not do tawaf with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ " I said: Yes indeed. He said: Did you see him touch these two western corners? I said, #He said: Don't you have a good example in him? I said: Yes indeed. He said. Then stop bothering about that.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَتِيقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بَابَيْهِ، عَنْ بَعْضِ بَنِي يَعْلَى بْنِ أُمَيَّةَ، قَالَ قَالَ يَعْلَى طُفْتُ مَعَ عُثْمَانَ فَاسْتَلَمْنَا الرُّكْنَ قَالَ يَعْلَى فَكُنْتُ مِمَّا يَلِي الْبَيْتَ فَلَمَّا بَلَغْنَا الرُّكْنَ الْغَرْبِيَّ الَّذِي يَلِي الْأَسْوَدَ جَرَرْتُ بِيَدِهِ لِيَسْتَلِمَ فَقَالَ مَا شَأْنُكَ فَقُلْتُ أَلَا تَسْتَلِمُ قَالَ فَقَالَ أَلَمْ تَطُفْ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَقُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ أَرَأَيْتَهُ يَسْتَلِمُ هَذَيْنِ الرُّكْنَيْنِ الْغَرْبِيَّيْنِ قُلْتُ لَا قَالَ أَفَلَيْسَ لَكَ فِيهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ قُلْتُ بَلَى قَالَ فَانْفُذْ عَنْكَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about following the example of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). It was narrated by Ya'la bin Umayyah, who said that he was circumambulating the Kabah with 'Uthman and when they reached the western corner which is next to the Black Stone, he wanted to touch it but 'Uthman asked him why he wanted to do so. He replied that he saw Prophet Muhammad touching it during tawaf. To this, 'Uthman said that if we have a good example in him then why bother about doing something else? This hadith teaches us to follow in his footsteps and not go beyond what has been prescribed by him. We should take his teachings as our guide and try our best to emulate them in our lives.
