Musnad Ahmad 463 (Book 4, Hadith 57) #34131
The Virtue of Guarding for Allah

SUMMARY: Guarding for one night in the name of Allah is better than a thousand nights spent in prayer and fasting.

It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin az-Zubair said: 'Uthman bin 'Affan (رضي الله عنه) said, speaking from his minbar: I am going to tell you a hadeeth that I heard from the Messenger of Allah ; nothing kept me from telling it to you except the fact that I care for you. I heard the Messenger of Allah say: "Standing guard for one night for the sake of Allah, may He be exalted, is better than a thousand nights spent in prayer and a thousand days spent fasting'.

QUICK LESSONS:
Stand guard at night in the name of Allah

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the virtue of guarding for Allah, may He be exalted. It was narrated by Abdullah bin az-Zubair that Uthman bin Affan said from his minbar that he heard the Prophet Muhammad say that standing guard for one night in the name of Allah is better than a thousand nights spent in prayer and fasting. This hadith emphasizes how important it is to serve God through acts such as guarding, which can be done even when we are not able to pray or fast due to physical limitations or other reasons. It also teaches us about selflessness, as we should strive to do good deeds without expecting any reward or recognition from others. Finally, this hadith reminds us that our actions should always be motivated by our love and devotion towards God rather than seeking praise from people around us.
