The Importance of Wudoo' After Intercourse

SUMMARY: This hadith explains the importance of performing wudoo' and washing one's private parts after having intercourse with one's wife, even if no ejaculation occurs.

Abu Salamah narrated that 'Ata' bin Yasar told him that Zaid bin Khalid al-Juhani told him that he asked 'Uthman bin 'Affan (رضي الله عنه): What do you think if a man has intercourse with his wife but does not ejaculate? 'Uthman(رضي الله عنه) Said. He should do wudoo' as for prayer and wash his private part. And 'Uthman (رضي الله عنه) said: I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; I asked 'Ali bin Abi Talib, az-Zubair bin al-' Awwam, Talhah bin 'Ubaidullah and Ubayy bin Ka'b about that, and they told him to do the same.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ يَعْنِي الْمُعَلِّمَ، عَنْ يَحْيَى يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، أَنَّ عَطَاءَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ، أخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ زَيْدَ بْنَ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيَّ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ، سَأَلَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قُلْتُ أَرَأَيْتَ إِذَا جَامَعَ امْرَأَتَهُ وَلَمْ يُمْنِ فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ يَتَوَضَّأُ كَمَا يَتَوَضَّأُ لِلصَّلَاةِ وَيَغْسِلُ ذَكَرَهُ وَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَسَأَلْتُ عَنْ ذَلِكَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ وَالزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ وَطَلْحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ وَأُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَأَمَرُوهُ بِذَلِكَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of performing wudoo', or ritual ablution before prayer in Islam. It is narrated by Abu Salamah that Ata ibn Yasar told him that Zaid ibn Khalid al-Juhani asked Uthman ibn Affan what he should do if he has intercourse with his wife but does not ejaculate. Uthman said that he should perform wudoo’ as for prayer and wash his private part. Uthman also said that he heard it from the Messenger of Allah and asked Ali ibn Abi Talib, az-Zubair ibn al-' Awwam, Talhah ibn Ubaidullah and Ubayy ibn Ka’b about it who all agreed to do the same. This hadith teaches us the importance of cleanliness in Islam as well as following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ even when it comes to matters related to intimacy between spouses. It also shows us how important it is to seek knowledge from reliable sources such as those close companions who were taught directly by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself.
